14 Daily Senior Exercises “Use it or Lose It”

We have all heard the popular saying “If you don’t use it, you lose it”. We all know the health benefits of fitness and exercise but statistics show 70 percent of Americans do not regularly exercise. Philips Lifeline has provided us with some useful exercises to keep active and avoid falls.

For aging Seniors it is especially important to commit to at least a small daily fitness program. Even 10 minutes can help maintain proper physical and mental health. Planning to complete these gentle exercises once a day and even in our busy lives if you end up completing them just a few times a week you will notice a difference, over time.

At I Need An Angel our Clients/Families often require our Caregiver to assist with daily exercises. It’s a great way to get active and to build strength. Our Caregivers can be a reminder or cheerleader for those who have received recommended fitness plans or exercises from their medical professionals and physical therapist.

According to the Harvard School of Public Health “If exercise and regular physical activity benefit the body, a sedentary lifestyle does the opposite, increasing the chances of becoming overweight and developing a number of chronic diseases.” (1)

A few more helpful tips:

1) Avoid an empty stomach: You may find you have more energy during your activity/workout if you enjoy a small healthy snack 30 min before.

2) Stay Hydrated: You may feel bloated if you consume a large amount of water before your workout. Instead drink water throughout your day, during your activity and after.

3) Walking is always a great exercise it is important to keep moving.
